Awatere House

The owners of this elevated site in the Awatere Valley were after an energy efficient home with an uncomplicated aesthetic that would take advantage of stunning views towards Mt Tapuae-o-Uenuku.

With the initial concept already completed by a certified passivhaus designer in England, KLT Architects developed the design and layout to suit the New Zealand environment and construction requirements.

Two wings are joined by a central entrance, and split gables create height and interest while drawing in the northern light. The house is constructed using SIPs panels which ensures ultimate insulation and warmth and can substantially decrease build timeframe.

Clad in simple painted weatherboards with clear cedar joinery and trims, the house gives a nod to classic New Zealand houses with a contemporary twist. Inside, exposed timber posts and beams accentuate height with the natural wood finish adding warmth and texture.

Features include:

  • Polished concrete floors with timber inserts throughout the entry, dining, living, kitchen and hallway spaces.

  • Exposed timber posts and beams in the dining, living and kitchen spaces.

  • Scullery with full height shelving, and access outside via a covered walkway.

  • Picture window towards mountain view on entrance

  • A separate snug / media room provides secluded space away from the open living zone

  • Courtyard to the north creating sunny and sheltered outdoor living space

  • Full height glazing from the living areas to allow panoramic views to the south.

Construction of this three-bedroom house with home office is currently underway and due for completion early 2024.
